Es Born Square

The splendorous Born square is Ciuadell’s nervous centre, the centre of the city emerging from a labyrinth of streets full of charm. The middle of the square has the Born obelisk; a twenty two metre high monument dated from the 19th century, which commemorates the resistance and final defeat of the city at the hands of the Turks in 1558, who devastated and set fire to the city and kidnapped an approximate number of four thousand captives to Constantinople.

The part of the square facing the port is the location of the Town Hall; a building more than appropriated for such power. The building used to be an old castle , still preserving parts of it, and built on top of a Muslim castle. Its main façade dates from the beginnings of the 20th century. If we wish to know more about the incredible construction, we can visit the old bastion as well as the gothic hall.
